Designing an assessment rubric

Hello Imagination Engineers!

This time I am going to talk about one of the most difficult aspects of being a teacher ,which is the assessment. Besides, I will show you a rubric that I created to evaluate my students in my Open Educational Project: The Story Behind Artworks.

For this challenge, I have been reading about assessment, types of assessment and support strategies for assessment. The most useful book that I read is The TKT Course CLIL Module by Kay Bentley. I recommend you to read chapter 15, 16 and 17 because they proportionate a very precise explanation of what you need to know about assessement. Then, I decided to see many examples of rubrics. I found this list that has many different examples from reliable sources. María Jesús García  created it and she has collected 21 examples of rubrics. After my research, I knew that it was the moment to think about my Open Educational Project, the super-learning missions that I created and the final outcome of my project. Finally, I started to create a rubric to assess my students. I bear in mind  some important aspects during the process that I will show in the following image that I have done with Canva:

The creating of the rubric took me time, but you can see it here. I used Quick Rubric  for making it. It is a free tool and ,more importantly, easy to use. Then, I uploaded to Issuu.

Now it is time to reflect on the learning that I have acquired thanks to this challenge.

Firstly, I am aware of the challenge of carrying out the assessment. To be able to assess effectively we need to find standards that are achievable. We need to be realistic and before assessing our learners have clear why we assess them. Also, it is totally recommended that learners know what aspects are being assessed and what learning outcomes they will have to achieve.

Focusing on the tools that I have used on this occasion, I must confess that this is the first time that I have not used Microsoft Word for creating the layout of a rubric. Quick Rubric is great for creating rubrics and it allows you to download all your creations without watermark. I highly recommend it to teachers.

Let me conclude by saying that I feel very happy because teachers are incorporating other ways of assessment apart from exams. Rubrics are useful tools for assessing communicative , cognitive, or practical skills as well as the learning process or the final outcome of a project among other things. I invite you to use them, you will not regret it.
